Natural Environment

Strolling around the village of Mathiatis, one encounters low bushes, pine trees, cypresses, almond trees, as well as wild flowers such as red poppies and orchids. Apart from these, there are also small fruit gardens with various types of fruit trees, olive trees, as well as some vegetable and pulses cultivations.

The water dam of Mathiatis, which is located just outside the village, is a place of extreme beauty. The dam collects large quantities of rainwater used for irrigating the area’s fields. The place is also popular amongst excursionists who visit the area to admire the beautiful landscape, as well as the swimming goldfish. On the banks of the dam one can also see amateur fishermen fishing trout fish.

Unfortunately, parts of the wild vegetation, the cultivations and the pine tree forest of Mathiatis were destroyed in the great fire which broke out in the middle of June 2009 along the road linking Mathiatis to Analiontas and Mathiatis to Lythrodontas and which even threatened residential areas. Months later, a tree planting campaign was organised in order to reforest the fire stricken areas.

Undoubtedly, the village of Mathiatis can be the ideal place for someone who wants to come close to nature, enjoy the beautiful green landscape and breathe the fresh air of the pine forest by taking the short 20-minute drive from Nicosia and Larnaca respectively.
